Background of the study
Assessment is a core component of the educational process, as it measures students' understanding and proficiency in the subjects they study. Traditional assessment methods, such as written exams, quizzes, and oral tests, have been used for decades in secondary schools (Usman & Abdullahi, 2023). These methods primarily focus on evaluating students’ recall and ability to apply knowledge in a limited timeframe. However, as technology has advanced, digital assessment tools have emerged as alternatives to traditional methods. Digital assessments can include online quizzes, automated grading systems, and interactive assignments, offering benefits like instant feedback, more varied question formats, and easier tracking of student progress (Zubair & Lawal, 2023).

In Sokoto South, secondary schools are increasingly adopting digital assessment methods as part of their efforts to modernize education. Despite the clear advantages, challenges related to infrastructure, teacher training, and student adaptation remain (Hassan & Ibrahim, 2023). This study will compare the effectiveness of traditional and digital assessment methods, focusing on factors such as accuracy, efficiency, student performance, and overall satisfaction.

Statement of the problem
There is limited research comparing the effectiveness of traditional assessment methods with digital assessment tools in secondary schools in Sokoto South. The lack of empirical data makes it difficult to evaluate the advantages and challenges of transitioning from traditional assessments to digital ones. This study will explore how these two methods impact student performance, teacher efficiency, and the overall assessment experience.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare the effectiveness of traditional and digital assessment methods in terms of student performance in Sokoto South secondary schools.

  2. To assess the efficiency of traditional and digital assessment methods from the perspective of teachers and school administrators.

  3. To evaluate student perceptions and satisfaction with traditional versus digital assessment methods in Sokoto South secondary schools.

Research questions

  1. How do traditional and digital assessment methods compare in terms of student performance in Sokoto South secondary schools?

  2. What is the perceived efficiency of traditional versus digital assessment methods among teachers and administrators in Sokoto South secondary schools?

  3. How satisfied are students with traditional and digital assessment methods in Sokoto South secondary schools?

Significance of the study
This study will provide valuable insights into the comparative effectiveness of traditional and digital assessment methods, offering evidence to guide educational practices and policy-making. The findings will assist school administrators and educators in making informed decisions about adopting or improving digital assessment methods in secondary schools.

Scope and limitations of the study
The study will focus on secondary schools in Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, comparing traditional and digital assessment methods. The study does not include other educational districts or higher education institutions.
